      Abstract

The processes of trade liberalisation have received several criticisms. Mainly the environmentalists have manifested the concern these processes will become an additional source of pressure on natural resources in developing countries. Simultaneously, these countries are experiencing a growing tendency to use economic instruments for environmental management. Generally, their attempts are based upon the existing experience from developed countries in applying these instruments. Initially, this work looks for a reflection about the environmental protection in the context of the interaction between economy and environment based on the water resources sector. After this, some available instruments for environmental policy are presented, especially the market based instruments. Finally, the Brazilian situation regarding these issues is briefly analysed.
