The paper analyzes the relationship between farm size and productivity. Using data from 1985, for the state of Rio Grande do Sul, Brazil, the hypothesis of an inverse relationship is validated. Such a relation is explained by differences in factor use and allocational patterns between small and large farms, which is the mode of production hypothesis. It is also found that agricultural production exhibits constant returns to scale and some policy implications are outlined.Downloads
