TRADUÇÃO DE CÍCERO, FIN. I, 17-26: A CRÍTICA PRELIMINAR DO PENSAMENTO DE EPICURO NO DE FINIBUS

Abstract

The main subject of the first dialogue of Cicero’s De finibus, wich corresponds to books I e II of the treatise, is Epicurus’ moral thought. The opening passage of the dialogue contains a preliminary critique of Epicurus’ philosophy, which, undertaken by the character Cicero, gives rise to the treatment of the sententia de uoluptate. Provoked by the preliminary criticism, Torquato expounds Epicurus’s theory of pleasure in the first book, which is later refuted by Cicero in the second. We present here a Portuguese translation of this preliminary critique (Fin. I, 17-26). The translation is accopanied by a brief introduction and explanatory notes.
