TEATRALIDADE E DISCURSO FEMININO NA EPÍSTOLA DA HEROÍNA OVIDIANA

Abstract

This study provides a poetic translation, followed by notes, of Ovid’s Heroides 10, the epistle from Ariadne to Theseus. It aims to allow access to this classical text in Brazilian Portuguese, focusing on its female authorial voice. This voice is a defining feature of the collection, where most of the poems (with few exceptions) are internally attributed to women from the classical mythological tradition. Thus, our approach is grounded in a critical perspective that pays close attention to the intersections between gender, form, and authorship, which underpin our reading of the work. The project also explores the convergence of the text’s epistolary form with its theatrical elements, highlighting the dramaturgical potential of Ariadne’s writing as a key instance of the Heroides’ generic hybridity. Employing explanatory notes and translation strategies, we aim to demonstrate how the latent theatricality in Heroides 10 can open new interpretative paths for a myth that has been fixed since Antiquity. Furthermore, Ariadne is recognized as a female textual authority with her own aesthetic and discursive aims. This premise informs a translation that dares to recover, as much as possible, the poetic texture of the Latin text. The outcome is a reading that is both imbued with poetic sensibilities and consciously aligned with a feminine interpretive stance.
