O CAVALEIRO DO REI ENTRE TRÊS REINOS LINGUÍSTICOS: TRADUÇÃO DE PROVÉRBIOS EM DEATH AND THE KING'S HORSEMAN DE WOLE SOYINKA
Abstract
The Nigerian playwright Wole Soyinka came to prominence in 1986 as the first African author to be awarded the Nobel Prize in Literature. Among his works, the play Death and the King’s Horseman stands out as one of the most studied, discussed, and staged around the world. Based on an event that took place in colonial Nigeria in the 1940’, with both African and European characters, the play presents great linguistic wealth, African oral genres standing out, among them the proverb, responsible for much of the play’s poeticity. This article compares some of the proverbs used in the play in the original Yoruba version with their English adaptation by Soyinka in the play, supplying a Portuguese translation and discussing the possible relations between these languages and their cultures.
