Posidippus of Pella and the Ptolemies

A translation of the equestrian epigrams 78-82 AB and 87-88 AB (P.Mil.Vogl. VIII 309, col. XII 20 – XIII 14 and XIII 31 – XIV 1)

Abstract

This article is dedicated to the translation and commentary of a set of epigrams attributed to the Hellenistic poet Posidippus of Pella which celebrate the equestrian victories of members of the Ptolemaic dynasty in Panhellenic games: 78-82 AB and 87-88 AB (P.Mil Vogl. VIII 309, col. XII 20 – XIII 14 and  XIII 31 – XIV 1). Articulating topoi from the late-archaic epinician poetry and from the agonistic epigram tradition, the poetic compositions celebrate the glory of the royal house of Egypt in the beginning of the 3rd century B.C., evincing the female figures: Berenice I, Arsinoe II Philadelphos and Berenice Phernophoros (or Berenice II Euergetis).
