Special Issue - Bioinformatics and Computational Biology

In this edition we have a Special Issue dedicated to Bioinformatics. A vast and somewhat confusing term, it defines an interdisciplinary field that connects software development and the understanding of biological data. Bioinformatics encompasses biology, computer science, mathematics and statistics (oftentimes also physics, chemistry, and general biomedical sciences) to analyze and interpret biological data. This kind of combined approach is commonly referred to as in silico analyses (as to resemble in vivo and in vitro analyses).

Here, we present articles that were submitted upon an open call for manuscripts dealing specifically with biological problems from a computational standpoint. These manuscripts were peer-reviewed by specialists with both computational and biological sciences backgrounds, something that ensures not only the quality of their informatics underpinnings, but also their applicability in life sciences. We hope the reader will enjoy the work collected in this issue, keeping in mind that Bioinformatics is a broad and still growing interdisciplinary field, to which we hope more researchers become interest in.
