Practical classes are efficient tools in the teaching-learning process. However, the lack of supporting materials often represents a challenge to such classes. Thus, we aimed to develop and evaluate the use of a manual of practical classes in the course on Morphology and Taxonomy of Cryptogams, at Ceará State University, Brazil. After elaboration, the manual was evaluated through a questionnaire by the students enrolled in the course, as well as through the evaluation methods SAM and SMOG. We found that the use of the manual increased learning during practical classes. The manual was also shown to be complementary to textbooks as well as an important source for students to study for tests. Students considered the manual to be well-organized, due to the facts that: the texts therein follow a logical order, i.e., reflecting the order of appearance of species; illustrations are relevant; the “Know more” sections add up to knowledge; descriptions of procedures ease student performance during practical classes; and directed studies aid in content retention. The SMOG and SAM methods rated the material as satisfactory and excellent, respectively. Thus, the manual revealed to be an important auxiliary tool for practical classes, as it facilitated the teaching-learning process.Downloads
