Abstract

"Son" (2021), written and directed by Irishman Ivan Kavanagh, follows Laura, a distressed mother whose son David contracts a mysterious illness. Although set in the United States, the narrative parallels the experiences of single mothers in Ireland, who were placed in institutions like Mother and Baby Homes until the 1990s. This study explores how "Son" (2021) reflects social, identity, and historical aspects of Ireland despite its American setting. The objective is to analyze the film, based on interpretations based on studies on horror cinema, Irish cinema, and Irish history, especially in relation to the Catholic Church and the Mother and Baby Homes.
