Abstract

This article aims to investigate the aspects of nature’s representation in Between the Acts (2022) by Virginia Woolf. Starting with a discussion about the narrative focus in Woolf’s works, we analyze how the author experimented with forms of fiction. We argue that one of these experiments involved nature as an actant. Using the works of Adkins (2022) and Bennet (2010), we define what we consider to be an actant nature and how it is present in Woolf’s works. Our main argument is that, in her critique of Empire, Woolf positions nature as a symbol of resistance to a predatory and territorialist civilizational project. This research expands on a discussion present in the author’s master’s dissertation.
