Since its earliest days, society has sought to achieve its interests by reconciling them with the resources available in the environment. From this perspective, participatory approaches emerge with the aim of contributing to a contextualized understanding of space and its interactions. Thus, this article aims to present the participatory mapping of the urban center of Baía Formosa (RN), highlighting the city’s potentialities and socio-environmental problems. Social Cartography (SC) is discussed as a viable tool to support territorial planning (TP). Methodologically, the study was based on the investigation–action–participation triad and was structured in four phases inherent to SC: (1) establishing bonds between researcher and community to understand the local context; (2) applying cartographic techniques and conducting thematic workshops; (3) developing and analyzing cartographic materials, including the transition from analog to digital maps; (4) delivering the maps and discussing possible applications and future guidelines. The results revealed a collective understanding of the community’s needs and aspirations in relation to the available socio-environmental resources, providing a reflection on the reality of their territory.
