Analysis of Institutional Endogeny at the Federal University of Rio Grande do Sul

Abstract

The identification of Higher Education Institutions (HEIs) as agents of spatial production allows us to analyze their performance in the formation of centralities, economic, demographic, infrastructural and sociocultural dynamics. Its implementation implies the establishment of external forces and the improvement of internal forces, encouraging urbanization, the need for labor, the formation of human capital, etc. This article addresses institutional endogeny, which discusses the relationship between academic training and the inter-institutional geographic mobility of the teaching staff of an HEI. Here, we work with the Federal University of Rio Grande do Sul (UFRGS) as a case study, aiming to identify and analyze the academic training of professors working at UFRGS, within the scope of graduation and post-graduation. In methodological and operational terms, a database was created with public information from the teaching staff working at the institution regarding their inter-institutional geographic mobility internally and externally to the state of Rio Grande do Sul. Data were obtained from a search for CVs on the Lattes Platform that were publicly available on the website in 2019, totaling 2,507 CVs analyzed. The research conclusions indicated UFRGS' performance in attracting professionals with relevant geographical mobility, which contributed to the generation of centralities, attractiveness of human resources and the territorial division of labor.
