The reflections presented here result from a research anchored at the Faculty of Education, of the Federal University of Rio Grande do Sul, entitled Profile of the professional who works with Geography in Basic Education schools. The time frame is defined between 2018 and 2022, and the spatial design is located in Greater Porto Alegre and neighboring municipalities, in the State of Rio Grande do Sul. The objectives of this text are to discuss part of this research, focusing on the need for a closer relationship between the university and the school so that graduates of the degree are committed and get to know the work environment. In addition, we seek to understand the reasons and implications that lead teachers to work with Geography in Basic Education without proper training in this degree. The methodology used was of a qualitative nature, based on interviews with Basic Education teachers who work with Geography, trained or not in the area. For this purpose, the narratives of four teachers were selected. The results show that the university is often unaware of the reality of Basic Education, compromising the proposition of more forceful actions with Geography in the mediation of teachers and students. Another visible perception is the reductionism of Geography teaching, when worked by teachers without specific training. The text contains fragments of the interviews with their respective analyzes for the construction of reflections on possible actions that may affect the qualification of teaching and that contribute to the training and professional and personal development of teachers and graduates, bringing together universities and schools.
