This article is the result of an ethnographic research carried out in the City of Goiás, State
of Goiás, Brazil. Based initially on the report of two washerwomen (mother and
daughter), the proposal is to analyze the washing work as a process of gender
subordination. Methodologically, I tried to cross the interview data with data from the
civil police and images (photographs, drawings) in order to discuss who these women
were and how they were treated in public (rivers and streams) and private environments
(house of the bosses), an approach that I seek to carry out. in the light of authors such as:
Gayatri Spivak, José Jorge de Carvalho and Georges Vigarello.
Keywords: City of Goiás. Washers. Subalternity
