Abstract

This article aims to establish significant periods and landmarks in the social history of the cafés in the central area of Porto Alegre , intending to unmask the tram of the relations between the diverse representations, contexts and roles played by such places in the experiences of certain urban groups, from years 1920 to 1940. Such concern arms itself on the question about the allocation of space of the construction process of social identities and its relation with the composition of a collective memory, where the reference to the cafés appears as one of the main emblems concerning this period of the history of the city.
