Abstract

Lakitas, musical instruments aerophones, whose origin is in central Los Andes approximately seven thousand years back, arrive at the zone of Arica more than one thousand five hundred years ago and since then they have undergone numerous aesthetic and practical modifications among others. Until middle of XXth century, they were elaborated with vegetal cane. Then, Polyvinyl Chloride, a material industrially created with other purposes, was put in its place.

This article unfolds in three areas: (i) how the passage from cane to vinyl in lakitas of Arica happened, (ii) how the differences between instruments of both materials are understood and, (iii) what is to do a lakita roncar, main virtue of this aerophone.

The hypothesis of this study proposes that this technological change is sustained in a particular way of think this instrument and its musical quality, which owns a long data in Los Andes and, that this change has been agenced by its own manufacturers and interpreters.
