THE CITY PERCEIVED: METHODOLOGICAL ISSUES IN INVESTIGATING URBAN SOUND ENVIRONMENTS

This article is about the sensory experience of the inhabitant in the urban environment. This experience develops into a general state of neglect or unconsciousness, making it difficult to research. How to tell what has no status memorable? Within the sensory hierarchy that privileges the visual, sound, along whit the rest of the senses, is in parentheses. These perceptions of the urban environment are at the edge of the distinguishable, of the memorable and therefore of the relatable. This presents us whit a methodological challenge because our classic methodologies of research basically rely on questions and answers, in conversations and interviews. How can we take from the state of near unconsciousness these sensory experiences of the city? It is proposed to begin to answer these questions by a review of methods to take this challenge: recurrent observation, listening reactivated, descriptions in place.
