Abstract

In our study, we examine the experiences of two women involved in the care of people with Hansen’s disease at the former São Julião colony-asylum (Campo Grande, Mato Grosso do Sul) during the second half of the 20th century. We draw on the writings of Lenilde Ramos, an activist and worker at São Julião, and the testimonies of Sister Silvia Vecellio. The literary and mnemonic repertoire of Ramos, Vecellio, and others brings sharper contours to the characters who lived in the former leprosy colony. We thus use literature as a discursive practice, linking language, memory, and history, with a focus on the total institution, the disease, the patients, and, of course, the leading roles played by women such as Lenilde Ramos and Sister Silvia.
