My article suggests the idea of “absolute exile” to understand how Jean Améry (1912-1978) conceived the story of his banishment from his native Austria beginning in 1939, the year after the country's annexation by Nazi Germany (Anschluss). A survivor of concentration and extermination camps during World War II, Améry produced a dense reflection on exile and statelessness in the genre of testimonial literature, without neglecting the universal scope of such phenomena. From the point of view of this article, some of Améry's texts, used as primary sources, help us to better understand the complexities and objective and subjective impacts of human displacement in the history of the present time.
