Abstract

If football, in itself, has been born “modern”, what is at stake when, more than a century after the codification of the sport rules, discourses such as those that enunciate the need to “modernize” it are articulated in the public sphere? Instigated by this initial question, the essay that follows aims to understand the effects of the most recent cycle of football modernization on the collective identities that constitute the Latin American football field. It is, above all, a question of unraveling the historical meanings of the idea of “modernization” as a privileged signifier of collective identities forged in the hegemonic neoliberal context. To achieve this objective, we will seek to combine the reflections of the Mexican Marxist philosopher Bolívar Echeverría (2011) regarding the different socio-historical configurations of capitalist modernity with the post-Marxist approach of Ernesto Laclau and Chantal Mouffe (2015) regarding the discursive and hegemonically mediated nature of collective identities.
