The film The Spiders is a travelogue that carries the viewer through the United States, Mexico and Peru, encountering an ancient and lost Inca civilization. Produced in interwar Germany, it was filmed in the zoo of one of the most prominent entrepreneurs in the field of human zoos, Carl Hagenbeck, in the city of Hamburg. Human zoos were ethnographic exhibitions of so-called exotic people, which, forged in a colonial context, were at the same time forms of racial categorizations that combined the functions of exhibition, performance and education. This research analyzes the film The Spiders (1919), directed by Fritz Lang, and the influences of ethnographic collections and human zoos on this cinematographic work. Based on an intense ethnography of institutional and family archives, materials such as photographs, letters, newspaper reports, human exhibition leaflets, scripts, posters and museum catalogs are used to understand the intermediality of The Spiders, thus pointing to the survival of primitivist regimes of visuality in contemporary images. The film was announced as a work that used original objects from the Ethnological Museum of Hamburg, in addition to being produced by Heinrich Umlauff, Hagenbeck's nephew and also owner of an ethnographic museum and businessman in the field of ethnographic collections and human zoos.
