Abstract

This article investigates the relationships between image, memory, and agency based on the ethnographic experience with the vaqueiros de gibão, a specific type of cowboy in the Seridó region of Rio Grande do Norte, Brazil. Drawing from the NOSSOS ENTES (2019) exhibition project, we discuss how photography transcends its materiality to become an entity, mobilizing emotions and social networks. The theoretical approach engages with Alfred Gell, Els Lagrou, and Howard Morphy, particularly regarding transcultural aesthetics and the agency of images. The methodology includes long-term fieldwork and photographic return practices, exploring interactions between the cowboys and the Guardians of the Images — urban participants who adopted the portraits as large-scale lambe-lambes (paste-up street posters). The results indicate that images do not merely document but rather establish relationships and transform meanings. We conclude that photography, as it circulates between territories, acquires the status of a living presence, opening a fertile field for discussions on art and anthropology.
