Abstract

Musealizing the difference:

Virtual LGBTQIAPN+ Archive and Museums

This article presents anthropological reflections on the experience of virtual LGBTQIAPN+ museums, institutions dedicated to the construction and safeguarding of the memories of this group, as well as the provision of digital collections and virtual exhibitions. Considering the importance of these actions as a means of including gender and sexual diversity in the museum field, of historical reparation, and of the struggle for heritage citizenship, we systematize information from three exemplary experiences: the Bajubá Museum, the Transgender Museum of History and Art (MUTHA), and the Brazilian Lesbian Archive. As a result, we offer a critical review of the issues surrounding “LGBT+ Museology”, contemplating the “desire for a museum” and the “dispute over the archive” to engender a debate that addresses the idea of “musealizing difference”.
