Abstract

This article aims to propose a theoretical-methodological approach on the materialization of reality and cisness through possible (and sometimes uncomfortable) convergences and knots between the Trans Studies and the Social Studies of Science and Technology. Based on the problem of “passing”, we discuss the “sexed reality of the body”, its webs and fissures based on the concepts of circulating reference and apparatus of bodily production. For that purpose, a reading of the case Agnes, which became known in the 1960’s through the sexologist Robert J. Stoller and the sociologist and ethnomethodologist Harold Garfinkel, is presented in order to tension the implications of matter in the production of reality and cisness. It has become evident how both reality and cisness depend upon the intra-action of material-semiotic entanglements. We have come to the conclusion that both reality and cisness are not self-evident phenomenons, but appear natural as the result of articulating practices that aim to stabilize both terms.

Keywords: Reality; Cisness; Materialization; Intra-action.
