Abstract

In this paper I intend to analyze the projects of life, practices and urban narratives of
migrants small businesses owners in Bonfim, East Porto. The data are from an
ethnographic research carried out between July 2020 and January 2021. In this research I
sought to understand how the projects of these individuals that opens cafes, restaurants
and bars in Bonfim intercepts both with the urban dynamics of the region and with the
strategic plans for the city. Porto invests in a competitive-city and tourist-city marketing
approach. I seek to cross ethnographic observations as a Brazilian immigrant researcher
in Porto, Portugal, with the imaginaries, everyday practices and narratives about urban
change of two of my main interlocutors: Paul, a British bar owner, and Bruno, a Brazilian
bakery. The aim is to move towards producing a decentered and relational urban
epistemology from the representations of the city from outsiders.
