Abstract

The purpose of this study is to discuss the physician’s role in the maintenance of oral health, without intending to replace the dentist, but trying to offer basic information for a correct procedure in the initial approach and guidance of patients. This paper underscores that it is essential for the physician to have basic knowledge about both the temporary and the permanent dentitions, as well about the main affections of some oral tissues. We suggest prophylactic measures to prevent dental decay, such as dietetic counseling, removal of bacterial plaque by means of correct dental hygiene, with brushing and the use of dental floss, and increase of tooth resistance through the appropriate
use of sodium fluoride. As the first person to convey this information to the patient, the physician can contribute significantly to the development of healthier dentitions.
