Abstract

Fasciolosis is caused by the fluke Fasciola hepatica. It is an infection that occurs in temperate areas, being endemic in South America. Sheep and cattle are the main definitive hosts. Man is an intermediate host, being contaminated through the ingestion of vegetables or water. After ingestion, the parasite is released into the duodenum, from where it migrates to the bile ducts, becoming an adult, a process that lasts between three and four months. When in the liver parenchyma, it can cause necrosis and fibrosis. In the bile ducts, it can obstruct, dilate or cause fibrosis.
