About the Journal

Clinical and Biomedical Research (CBR) is a scientific publication of the Hospital de Clínicas de Porto Alegre (HCPA) and the School of Medicine at the Federal University of Rio Grande do Sul (FAMED/UFRGS), both based in Porto Alegre, Brazil.

Journal scope

CBR publishes original research, review articles, and case reports in all relevant areas of the Health Sciences, encompassing clinical, basic, and epidemiological research. The selection criteria for publication include the relevance of the topic, methodological rigor, and adherence to the journal's editorial norms.

Peer review 

CBR adopts a rigorous editorial workflow to ensure scientific quality and ethical integrity in all publications. The process consists of the following stages:

  • Technical and ethical screening (desk review)
    Immediately after submission, the Editorial Office conducts a documentary review to verify compliance with formatting guidelines, the submission of required documents, and adherence to ethical standards (including Institutional Review Board/Ethics Committee approvals, where applicable).
  • Editorial merit assessment
    Manuscripts that pass the technical screening are evaluated by the Editors-in-Chief regarding writing clarity, methodological robustness, and alignment with the journal’s scope. If the paper demonstrates scientific merit, it is assigned to a Section Editor (a specialist in the field), who determines whether the manuscript should proceed to external peer review or be rejected (archived).
  • Peer review
    External evaluation is conducted via a double-blind system, ensuring anonymity for both authors and reviewers. Each manuscript is evaluated by at least two independent reviewers. In line with open science practices, the journal allows reviewers to choose to sign their reports, revealing their identity if they wish to do so.
  • Final decision
    The Section Editor consolidates the reviewers' reports and recommends a decision to the Editor-in-Chief. The possible outcomes are:
    • Accept: The article is approved for publication.
    • Revisions Required: The authors must implement the requested changes. In cases of substantial modifications, the manuscript may undergo a second round of peer review before a final decision is reached.
    • Reject: The manuscript does not meet the criteria for publication.

The final publication decision rests with the Editor-in-Chief, based on the recommendations provided by the Section Editors and reviewers.

Publication frequency

Since 2024, CBR operates on a continuous publication model. Manuscripts are published online as soon as they are ready, ensuring timely dissemination of research findings.

Open access policy

This journal provides immediate open access to its content, supporting a greater global exchange of knowledge by making research freely available to the public. The journal operates under a Diamond Open Access model, with no article processing charges (APCs) for authors and no subscription fees for readers.

All articles are published under the Creative Commons Attribution license (CC BY 4.0), which permits unrestricted use, distribution, and reproduction in any medium, provided the original work is properly cited. Authors retain copyright of their work.

Clinical and Biomedical Research (CBR) is a scholarly, open-access, peer-reviewed journal with a history spanning 35+ years. Formerly published as Revista HCPA (ISSN 0101-5575), CBR continues to uphold its commitment to disseminating high-quality research.
