Abstract

This dissertation investigates the culture of candombe based on an ethnographic research conducted in Montevideo, Uruguay in 2000. The narrative is developed with both images and ethnography. It presents la gente de Ansina in their intense and performative dynamic: during carnival, with the Comparsa de Negros y Lubolos Sinfonia de Ansina, in the course of the year with the salidas de Tambores and, in their daily life, “down there” at Gustavo’s house, the space which shelters this social network. Using the conceptual tools of Performance theory, I intend to capture within this ethos candombero-in which laughing stamps their aesthetic presence in the world– vestiges for understanding the dilemmas and tensions between the reinvention of tradition and the demands for modernity in Uruguayan carnival.
