To cook a “javaporco”: consumption taboos in a town of Minas Gerais

Abstract

The “javaporco” is a hybrid between the wild boar and the domestic pig that forms wild herds that have moved from south to north of Brazil. Its meat is edible, but little appreciated. The reasons for this are the aura of illegality that encompasses hunting activity and, at the same time, a low appreciation of its taste. The data collected here and the subsequent analysis are the result of a field incursion in a small town near Lake Furnas, in the state of Minas Gerais.
