Patterns of support for the far right in Spain

The decision to vote for the Vox party

Abstract

This article looks at who Vox voters are, what they think, and why they voted for the party in the 2023 Spanish elections. The study used data from the Centro de Estudios Murciano de Opinión Pública, from the University of Murcia, including information on sociodemographic and political aspects and attitudes of voters. According to the statistical models developed, support for Vox is primarily linked to right-wing ideological positioning, while attitudes regarding immigration and cultural issues act as complementary factors in explaining electoral behavior. The results also indicate that variables such as religion, affective polarization, and authoritarian tendencies have little influence in the dimensions addressed.

She holds a PhD in Political Science from the University of São Paulo (USP) and is a professor at the Federal University of Minas Gerais (UFMG). She is the President of the Brazilian Association of Electoral Researchers (Abrapel), Director of WAPOR-Latam (World Association for Public Opinion Research), and coordinator of the Political Communication and Electoral Behavior Group (LATICOM), linked to the Latin American Political Science Association (ALACIP).

Diego Prata, Universidade Federal de Minas Gerais

Diego Prata holds a master's degree and is a doctoral candidate in Political Science at the Federal University of Minas Gerais (UFMG). His research focuses on democracy, autocratization, and democratic resilience in Latin America.

Rafael Fonseca, Universidade Federal de Minas Gerais

Rafael Fonseca is a doctoral candidate in Political Science at the Federal University of Minas Gerais (UFMG) and holds a master's degree in International Relations from PUC Minas. He works as a qualitative research analyst at Market Analysis and is a member of the Presidential and Executive Cabinets Network (PEX-Network), the Center for Legislative Studies (CEL), and Public Opinion groups.
