This article shares the results of a research project that analyzed the discursive effects of the context of conservative advancement on Brazilian educational policies between 2010 and 2022. More specifically, we explain the analysis of discourses from interviews conducted with actors who identify as progressive and conservative, and who are professionals working in political and educational institutions. This analysis observes the forces that compose conservatism as they materialize in educational policies, framing oral and written discourses according to ideals of human formation. It concludes that education is a field of ideological dispute, and that a quality education is not reduced to results of proficiency in external assessments. Only an education built with broad democratic participation can balance the criteria of those who measure its quality and direct its goals.
