The coincidence between the passing of UFRGS’s former dean Francisco Luiz dos Santos Ferraz and the 50th anniversary of the university’s Master’s Degree Program in Sociology and Politics deserves reflexion. This quasi-‘astral’ conjunction is not only coincidental, but indicative of an encounter between two chronological cycles between past and present. Five decades ago Prof. Ferraz started his path as a future scholar in the academic world, with a true calling for Political Science, by doing his graduate studies in one of the most prestigious American institutions: Princeton University. This article aims to retrace this university manager’s academic path and at the same time outline the teaching and research of Political Science at UFRGS’s graduate level.
