Abstract

The objective of this article is to analyze the level of nationalization of the two largest parties in the history of the Bissau-Guinean democracy to verify which of the two has become more nationalized, that is, which has managed to extend its influence and popularity to more parts of the national territory. We verified this phenomenon based on a rigorous and comparative analysis of the election results data provided by the National Electoral Commission – CNE. A longitudinal study was carried out verifying the performance of the two parties throughout the subsequent legislative elections of 2004 and 2008. As a result, we found that the African Party for the Independence of Guinea-Bissau and Cape Verde – PAIGC, became more nationalized, that is, its popularity was decentralized throughout the national territory, unlike the Social Renewal Party – PRS.
