Abstract

Based upon the data of the World Values Survey Research from 2006, this paper analyzes gender value changes and their impact on the Uruguayan public opinion. We also seek to explain what factors operate in the structuring of more egalitarian gender values. The results indicate that women, especially those that belong to the more educated strata are more critical of gender stereotypes and demonstrate more egalitarian values. Given the actual composition of the Uruguayan political elite, it has implications for the gains of a balanced participation of men and women in the public sphere.
