Post-dictatorial literature, often employing the strategy of autofiction, seeks a discursive plurality capable of generating subjectivities. Julián Fuks’s novel A resistência, governed by the signs of distrust and hesitation, proposes open-ended meanings, countering the singular narrative of the dictatorial regime and creating space for the elaboration of alternative identities. This article investigates how the work forges the subjectivity of the author-narrator, aiming to demonstrate that, by weaving and unweaving the narrative, it suspends the representational flow and produces a discourse that is primarily reflective and interrogative. This process of subjectivation closely resembles that which is enacted in the essayistic form, fundamental to the openness and becoming of the work. For this analysis, we draw on Costa Lima’s (2005) theoretical contributions regarding the invention of the essayistic self, Adorno’s (2012) reflections on the essay’s sinuously exploratory method, and Diana Klinger’s (2006, 2008) studies on autofictional strategies. We find that A resistência, by employing deviant methods such as the essay form, forges a subjectivation process central to highlighting its autofictional strategy, characterized by the invention and performance of a self grounded chiefly in meditative reflection on the narrative, including on the very act of writing.
