Abstract

This essay reflects on the relationship between dance and aging through the trajectory of Françoise and Dominique Dupuy, emblematic figures of French contemporary dance whose gestures and teachings resonated across different contexts and countries, especially in Italy, England, and Brazil, as well as in France. For more than seventy years, the couple sustained an artistic and pedagogical practice marked by resistance and political-cultural commitment, challenging the logic of a society that condemns dancers to a premature retirement from the stage, as they continued performing professionally until nearly ninety years of age. The text revisits key moments of their biographies —Françoise’s formation in the avant-garde environment of Lyon, Dominique’s early connection with the German expressionist dancer Jean Weidt, the creation of the Ballet Moderne de Paris, their own modern dance Company, the first in France— as well as their activism in favor of the autonomy of modern dance, achieved through artistic and pedagogical projects and an active participation in the Ministry of Culture during the socialist government of François Mitterrand. Far from considering old age as a limit, the Dupuys transformed it into a source of aesthetic plenitude, demonstrating that Physical decline can be turned into expressive strength. Their legacy invites us to rethink artistic creation beyond virtuosity and to reclaim the right to dance until the very end of our lives. This research is grounded in a qualitative approach based on primary sources —texts, interviews, and testimonies of the protagonists— which provides the analysis with a vivid and testimonial dimension.
