In this article, body and language are articulated as mediating categories in the constitution of Brazilian theater and dance teachers as spectators. A qualitative analysis of data obtained through a long questionnaire carried out in 2013 with 95 theater and dance teachers, working in the field of regular education and informal education, is presented. The memories of identity and subjective constructions as spectators of performing arts teachers are precious clues in conducting pedagogical and artistic mediation processes in regular arts teaching and cultural action. The reflections based on the empirical material are outlined in theoretical articulations with academics who have dedicated themselves to issues concerning the formation of spectators, neurosciences and the function of the spectator, sociological and cultural aspects such as mediation of reception experiences, theatrical semiology, among others.
