Abstract

This paper seeks to account for individual uses of the pejorative term puto. Our hypothesis is that this term, normally used to insult its recipient for belonging to the group of homosexual men can be used solely as an insult to its recipient, without him necessarily belonging to the group referred to and without the intention of insulting the collective. This hypothesis arises from the English subtitles for this term taken from the Argentine series El marginal (Netflix 2016), whose analysis showed that puto is not always translated as fag/faggot, its literal translation, but that in a significant number of cases the translation resorts to individual insults to be accurate to the semantics of the target language.
