Abstract

Among the range of archives mobilized by Annie Ernaux in her autobiographical writing, photography is not only the most recurrent but also the one that best engages with the intermediary and interdisciplinary nature claimed by that project: between art and reality, literature and the human sciences. This article aims to assimilate Ernaux’s use of photos in order to highlight their creative aspect, resulting from the (re)invention operated through a work with language. We thus seek to situate the photographic archive within Ernaux’s work and reassess the limits of its interdisciplinarity. Therefore, we analyze passages from the books L’Usage de la photo (Ernaux; Marie, 2005) and Les Années (Ernaux, 2008), notably in light of essays on photography (Barthes, 2022; Sontag, 2004).
