Abstract

This paper presents a case study on the application of the Peer Instruction methodology in a Phonology course at the Language Institute of the Federal University of Rio Grande do Sul. The objectives are to evaluate the methodology's effectiveness in teaching linguistic theories in higher education and to develop a repository of questions for use by other professors. The Peer Instruction methodology involves conceptual tests, during which students participate in two polling sessions: one before and one after a debate aimed at convincing their peers of the correct answer. This approach proved highly effective in reducing extended lecture sequences, fostering student engagement, and promoting argumentation as a pedagogical tool. Additionally, it enabled the reinforcement of acquired knowledge.
