Abstract

The article takes a look at the presence-absence of love in relation to femininity, through the character Ana Meneses, from the novel Crônica da casa assassinada (1959) by Lúcio Cardoso. Here the abyssal material now sees us and looks at us. The experience that blossoms from it is that of fascination with the unfathomable mystery of the constitution of love, which means attempting to translate the unspeakable. From the deepest part of this abyss, we must touch upon this presence-absence, this force that compels us in search of unattainable completeness. Within the limits of this text, we discard all pretensions, for words are like a lantern whose flickering light can only glimpse a pale image of Eros.
