The Latin American council of churches and the Latin American ecumenical conference “Mauricio Lopez” (1988)

Abstract

The article examines the Latin American ecumenical conference “Mauricio Lopez”. This conference was a crystallization point of a subgroup with in the American ecumenical network. Mauricio Lopez belonged to this subgroup, which brings together members of Ecuador, Argentina and Brazil. This meeting was held in Quito in 1988 and is named for a militant ecumenical disappeared in 1977 in Argentina, while the conference’s conclusions were published in Portuguese. To rebuild the members of the subgroup, fi rst was analyzed the trajectory of militancy of Mauricio Lopez, then the Latin American Council of Churches (CLAI), who was the organizer of the meeting. The next section studies at the organizations participating in the meeting. Subsequently, using as source the document prepared by the participants of the meeting, was described the Latin American ecumenical networkin the late 1980s. Finally we analyze the reasons for the nomination Lopez at Latin American ecumenical meeting.
