This article addresses the transformation of the meanings attributed to the Public Library of the State of Rio Grande do Sul at the time of its foundation in the 1870’s and later in the beginning of the 1920’s. The process of monumentalization of the library, laden with political usages strictly linked to the new Republican context, is analyzed as composing a politics of official memory. To shape this reflection, the passive correspondence pertaining to the institution between the 1872 and 1877 was analyzed as well as an article published in the newspaper A Federação.
