This paper examines the role of commemorative celebrations of freedom, mainly the celebrations of the Free Womb Law, on September 28, and of the Golden Law, on May 13, in the construction of Afro-Brazilian identities in Porto Alegre, in the last decade of the 19th century and the first decade of the 20th century. It analyzes how black leaderships represented themselves and their captivity, freedom and racial relations in post-abolition and how they negotiated the construction of their ethno-racial identities in the historical context of struggles against racism and social exclusion in Porto Alegre.
