Abstract

This article analyses the militia experience in British colonial America and the early US first republic. It emphasizes the role of antimilitarism in shaping the character of US military tradition in the antebellum period as well as the civilian control of the military establishment. I relate this influence to the social aversion to despotism coming from British political tradition, stressing conflicts between central, local and state authorities and the problems they posed to creating a Professional army.

Vitor Izecksohn, Programa de Pós-Graduação em História Social - UFRJ

Professor do Instituto de História e do Programa de Pós-Graduação em História Social da Universidade Federal do Rio de Janeiro. Doutor em História pela Universidade de New Hampshire. Fez pós-doutorado no Departamento de História da Brown University, atuando como professor visitante da mesma instituição em 2011. Foi bolsista do Gilder Lehrman Institute of American History (2005) e da Comissão Fulbright (2011). Seus interesses de pesquisa incluem os estudos comparativos sobre militares e sobre a administração pública no Brasil e nos Estados Unidos durante o século XIX, com ênfase na História do Recrutamento militar, nas comparações a respeito do impacto das guerras externas sobre os processos de formação dos Estados nacionais e no pensamento político no Brasil e nas Américas. Através de comparações realiza pesquisas sobre a expansão do poder público, especialmente no que se refere ao avanço dos processos de extração de impostos e de soldados. Seu mais recente livro é "Slavery and War in the Americas: Race, Citizenship and State Building in the United States and Brazil, 1861-1870", publicado pela University of Virginia Press. No momento é bolsista do Gilder Lehrman Center for the Study of Slavery, Resistance, and Abolition da Yale University.
