The African American Anti-apartheid movement in the United States: a reflection of African-Americans’ struggle at home and its impact on U.S. foreign policy

This paper attempts to analyze how and to what extent the Anti-Apartheid activism in the United States, after decades of organizing and protesting, began to influence U.S. – South African diplomatic relations. We will focus on the development of the African American anti-Apartheid Movement, particularly on the ulterior reasons and ultimate forms of grassroots activism. We will examine how the anti-Apartheid movement was perceived during the Reagan Administration, and the influence the Black movement could have had in challenging and changing certain aspects of U.S. foreign policy towards South Africa. Finally yet importantly, we will explore how the Black Movement saw the South African Regime and the U.S. foreign policy as a mirror that reflected the situation and claims of African Americans at home.
