Collective Art and Sisterhood Networks: The Gestation of the Common Work of Matriz Útera

Abstract

This article aims to address the way in which the collective Matriz Útera (Argentina) articulates art and mothering, trying to overcome the reduction of women to “elevator for the species” (Solnit), allying the plastic elaboration of clay pieces to the articulation of sisterhood relationships, as to contest the idea of gestation inherent to patriarchal devices of power-knowledge, and to promote the power of those women who approach the group. In his continued labor for four years, Matriz Útera is an example that, at the same time as generating children, it is possible to generate nonconformity and critical thinking, art and the world.
