War Against Women: Millôr Fernandes’ Anti-Feminist Humor in Veja Magazine (1968-1984)

Abstract

This article, based on the importance of debates on antifeminism in times of online misogyny and wide circulation of discourse that reject feminist agendas, aims to analyze the speeches on feminism produced by Millôr Fernandes between 1968 and 1984 in Veja magazine, where the writer , playwright, journalist and cartoonist wrote a humor column. Feminism was one of Millôr's main themes, which produced texts, sources for this article, but also humor drawings, with the aim of disqualifying and ridiculing feminisms and feminists. The aforementioned author's anti-feminist humor is part of a long history of persecution of feminisms in Brazil and, therefore, this work proposes reflections on discourses that, until today, make up the imagination about the fight for rights, equality and justice led by women. To this end, discourse analysis tools are used in conjunction with the understanding of the press as a source and object of historical investigation.
