Tradition and Utopia in Gilberto Freyre: future projects in interpretations of the past

Abstract

Gilberto Freyre was sociologist fundamental in the interpretation of the formation of national identity, was an intellectual committed to defending traditions, values and regional culture with an emphasis on that of the Northeast. This commitment spread to other areas of his analysis, understanding through his generational bonds his transnational perception of lusotropicalism. Therefore, the regional becomes transnational in its analyses. Based on this premise, we seek to analyze how the reading of the Freyrian tradition defined political projects for the future, through the aversion to modernity. Thus, support will be sought from authors such as Freud, Sartre and Williams to associate fear, subjectivity and utopia with the structures and conjunctures in which Freyre was associated and established dialogue.
